Broward County, the second most populated County in the state of Florida is located in the southeast part of the state. The state of Florida created Broward County in 1915 and named it after Napoleon Bonaparte Broward who was the governor of Florida from 1905 to 1909. Interestingly, the original name was intended to be Everglades County, but to then speaker of the House of Representatives, Ion Farris was able to amend the bill so that the County was named after the former governor. An interesting ethnic note is that Broward County is the only county in the nation outside of the Northeast in which the Italian-Americans formed the largest ethnic group according to the 2000 census. The Broward County main courthouse with its Circuit and County courts is located in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
